Historic District Design Guidelines
Established by the City of Canton's Zoning Ordinances, our Design Guidelines define the regulations for the Historic Preservation Overlay District.
Before submitting any Certificate of Appropriateness, we strongly recommend reviewing this guide. It covers what's allowed, what needs board approval, and how to make sure your project fits Canton's historic character. (Most recently amended July 2020 and August 2022.)

Any exterior change to a building in the historic district needs a Certificate of Appropriateness (COA) approved before the City issues permits. The process is simple — here's how it works:
- Get owner approval first. All planned improvements must be approved by the building owner before submitting.
- Submit your application. Drop it off at 290 E. Tyler St. or email it to grichardson@cantontex.com by noon the Wednesday before the first Tuesday of the month.
- Board review. Your application is reviewed at the regularly scheduled advisory board meeting.
- Once approved, Submit a sign permit at the City Permit Department, 201 N. Buffalo Street.
Main Street Incentive Grant
Developed by the Main Street Advisory Board, our Incentive Grant Program helps downtown merchants with small exterior renovations — façade work, signage, lighting, and other improvements that strengthen the historic district.
Funds are raised through volunteer Main Street fundraising promotions and corporate sponsorship. The program is designed to encourage the restoration and renovation of the Main Street District through small grants to building and business owners.

Apply for a Grant
If your project qualifies, apply for our Incentive Grant to help with costs.
Get Board Approval
The Advisory Board reviews and approves your project at the monthly meeting.
