Each board member must be able and willing to commit 4 to 10 hours of their time each month and more time during events when needed.

Canton has been in the Texas Main Street Program since 2001 and has achieved recognition from the National Trust for Historical Preservation.  The program is a downtown revitalization program of the Texas Historical Commission and is administered locally through volunteers and paid staff under the Canton Economic Development Corporation. Canton Main Street strives to preserve the historical and cultural heritage of Downtown Canton, restore a positive image, and create economic growth for the community through historic preservation activities, retail and tourism opportunities.

Some projects of the Canton Main Street Program in the past have been: coordinating the renovation of downtown sidewalks to include ADA accessibility, period lampposts, trash receptacles and benches; purchasing festive seasonal banners and lining the building tops with white lights; assisting downtown building owners with exterior renovations through design assistance and incentive grants; hosting the annual Autumn  Festival, free outdoor movies, Dinner on Main Street and holiday activities in the downtown area; providing co-op advertising opportunities for downtown merchants; serving as advocate of Downtown.
